                                                 WHAT'S NEW AT AFAB

A great big Happy New Year to you!  Here's hoping that 2009 is a great year for all of us despite the uncertainty of the economy.  One way or another, it's all gonna be all right.  Really, I know it will!

A very special welcome to those of you who are first time visitors to this site.  This website is intended to be not only a calling card for my company but also a resource for those of you who are trying to learn more about making good records.  The recording industry has changed drastically in the past few years and one of the most significant changes is that more and more people are making records in their homes.  This has had an impact on commercial studios and free-lance engineers (such as myself).  But every cloud has a silver lining and my silver lining has been the opportunity to consult, coach and help educate clients who, for budgetary reasons, cannot afford to make recordings unless they do all the work themselves.  However, some find that it's not always as easy as pushing a button.

There is as much art to recording a sound as there is to writing a song, playing an instrument or painting a picture.  As such, there are many guidelines and techniques but not so many hard and fast rules.   Over the next weeks and months I will post articles on various aspects of recording.  They will reflect my approach to recording and may sometimes be seasoned with philosophical musings.  It is my hope that you will find something helpful in them and that they will evoke your desire to learn more.  There are so many terrific resources available and many very different, yet valid, viewpoints.  So, take as much in as you can and figure out what works for you.  And if you have questions you'd like to ask, go to my "Contact Us" page and ask.  I'll be glad to give you an answer.  (And if I don't actually know the answer I'll make up something that sounds good.)

By the way, thanks for all the kind responses to my "HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR RECORDING" article (MUSIC TIPS page) and to the new article on getting better vocal sounds.  I've been pleasantly surprised at how many people seem to be reading this stuff.  As I mentioned before, the new article is the first of at least two that will deal with getting better vocals.  The other installment(s) will be posted as soon as I finish writing it (them).  You'd think I'd have had time to do some more during the Christmas break, but I was too busy eating and opening presents.  The new article can also be found on the "Music Tips" page.

It was a pretty busy summer! The biggest news is that the feature film "Billy: the Early Years" opened in theaters nationwide October 10 and several pieces of music in the film were recorded here. The movie tells the story of evangelist Billy Graham's early years - before he became a household name. It was filmed in Tennessee and all the music was recorded here as well. My softball buddy Scott Brasher scored the film and was kind enough to get me and other softball buddy Reggie Smith involved because of our experience in gospel music. Reggie coached Country music star Josh Turner in his vocal performances (Josh played the part of George Beverly Shea in the film) and I helped direct the piano accompaniments and mixed. Tracey Phillips (not a softball buddy, but a great piano player) played the accompaniments for Josh's performances on AFAB's 9-foot Baldwin piano. She also performed other piano cues for the movie. In addition, we cut a couple of short "big band" segments here at AFAB, setting everyone up in the room (piano, upright bass, drums and three horns) and recording live. All in all, there are seven pieces of music that AFAB was involved in. The Sony soundtrack album should be available soon (if it's not already).  Check out the photos from the Billy movie sessions in the "In the Studio Now" section below.

Other notable summer stuff included a day with Christian and Latin Pop star Jaci Velazquez, who delivered a Spanish rendition of "Go Tell" for the International Missions Board. Multi-faceted artist Rory Partin produced the session which also featured background vocals (in Spanish) by Señor Reggie and Señora Ladye Love (Señorita Amor) Smith.

Speaking of the multi-faceted Rory Partin, he returned to AFAB in September to work on a new album he recorded in Finland (yes, Finland). AFAB aficionados (I know there are lots of you out there) will remember that I mixed Rory's last album a couple of years ago and that it was a Big Band album - very Sinatra-esque. The new album is pop, though - sort of a blue-eyed soul thing with some good original songs Rory has written.
